Does Your Dog Bark When You're Away? Separation Anxiety and How to Deal with It
Share
3 AM: When the Neighbors Call You
I remember that call. 3 a.m. My client Ieva was crying on the phone.
"Dmitry, the neighbors say my dog has been barking for 6 hours straight. They're threatening to sue. I don't know what to do. I love Max, but..."
But she was afraid she would have to get rid of the dog.
After 8 weeks, Max was calm. The neighbors apologized for their earlier anger. Eve slept peacefully again.
If your dog barks when you're out, you're not alone. And most importantly: it's treatable .
Why Does Your Dog Bark When You Leave? (And No, It's Not a Bad Thing)
First of all: your dog is not bad. He is not intentionally punishing you. He is SUFFERING.
Barking when you are away usually means one of three things:
1. Separation Anxiety (Most Common)
Your dog is experiencing REAL anxiety when left alone. It's not just sadness - it's panic.
Signs:
- Barking/howling for a long time (30+ min)
- Starts barking ASAP when you leave
- Destructive behavior (biting, destroying)
- Urinates/defecates in the house (even though house trained)
- Drooling, tremor
- Trying to escape (scratching the door)
This is a SERIOUS problem that requires a professional approach.
2. Boredom and Excess Energy
The dog has too much energy and nothing to do. Barking = busyness.
Signs:
- Barks periodically (not constantly)
- Barking at the sounds, through the window
- Destroys things
- Young, energetic dog
- You walk little.
3. Territorial Barking
The dog "protects" the house from passersby, the mailman, and neighbors.
Signs:
- Only barks when someone passes by
- Loya at the window/door
- Aggressive body language
- Stops barking when the "threat" passes
How to Know What EXACTLY Your Dog Is Doing?
Here's a pro tip: record it .
Leave your phone or camera recording the video. Go away for 30 minutes. Come back and take a look.
What to Look for:
Separation Anxiety:
- Starts barking/howling IMMEDIATELY (0-5 min)
- Intense, constant barking
- Walks back and forth
- Trying to leave (scratching the door)
- Drooling, tremor
Boredom:
- Quiet for 10-20 minutes, then starts barking
- Periodic barking
- Plays with things, destroys them
- Barking at sounds
Territorial:
- Only barks when someone passes by
- At the window/door
- Short, sharp bark
Solution #1: Separation Anxiety (Most Severe Case)
If your dog has separation anxiety - this is not a quick fix. But it WORKS.
Step 1: Desensitization
(Base)
The goal: to teach your dog that your leaving = not a scary thing.
Week 1 - Neutralization of Exit Signals:
- Take the keys - do nothing - help
- Put on your coat - sit on the sofa for 5 minutes - take it off
- Go to the door - come back
- Repeat 10-20 times a day
The dog needs to understand: these signals DO NOT ALWAYS mean you are leaving.
Week 2 - Short Breaks:
- Go out the door for 5 seconds - come back
- If the dog is calm - a treat
- If it barks - too early, go back to week 1
- Gradually increase: 10 sec, 30 sec, 1 min
IMPORTANT: Always return WHILE the dog is still calm. Never return when he is barking - this reinforces the behavior.
3-4 Weeks - Longer Separations:
- Increase to 5 min, 10 min, 15 min
- Sometimes come back early - unannounced
- Always calm - no dramatic goodbyes or goodbyes
5-8 Weeks - Normal Time:
- Gradually reach 1-2 hours
- If the dog starts to worry - take a step back
- Be patient - it's a process
Step 2: Positive Associations
Your exit must be a GOOD thing for the dog.
Special Treats:
- Kong toy with food - gets it ONLY when you leave
- Special chews - ONLY when you are out
- Puzzle toys with treats
- Royal Canin Relax Care Loaf - wet food with soothing ingredients
How to Use:
- Before leaving - give a special treat
- Leave peacefully (without drama!)
- When you return - take the treat (if it hasn't been eaten)
- Dog learns: exit = great things
Step 3: Environmental Management
Create a Safe Zone:
- One room or space with everything you need
- Comfortable bed
- Water
- Toys
- Your scented garment (soothing)
Sounds:
- Leave the radio or TV on (people's voices are calming)
- Or special calming music for dogs
- White noise machine (masks outside sounds)
Pheromone Diffuser:
- Synthetic dog pheromones (e.g. Adaptil)
- Affects 70-80% of dogs
- Turn on 2 weeks before starting the program
Step 4: Physical and Mental Fatigue
A tired dog = a calmer dog.
Before Leaving:
- 30-60 min walk (depending on breed)
- 15 minutes of intense play
- 5 min of training (mental fatigue)
- Feed - a well-fed dog sleeps
The dog must be TIRED before you leave.
Solution #2: Boredom and Energy
If the problem is boredom, the solution is simpler:
More Movement
- Increase your walks by 30-50%
- Add a morning jog
- Dog park - socialization + energy release
- Games with other dogs
Mental Stimulation
- Puzzle toys with food
- Olfactory games (hide treats)
- Training - teach new tricks
- Toy rotation - change weekly
Pro Tip: 15 min of mental stimulation = 45 min of physical activity!
Activities When You're Out
- Kong toy with frozen food (takes 30-60 min)
- Chewing bones (long-lasting)
- Interactive toys
- Slow-feeding bowl (takes longer to eat)
Solution #3: Territorial Barking
If the dog barks at passersby/sounds:
Manage the Environment
- Close the window curtains.
- Move the dog to another room (without a window to the street)
- White noise machine (masks outside sounds)
Teach the "Quiet" Command
- When a dog barks - say "Quiet"
- When it stops (even for 2 seconds) - a treat
- Repeat, repeat, repeat
- Gradually increase the time of silence
Desensitization to Triggers
- Record sounds that provoke barking
- Play VERY quietly
- If the dog is calm - a treat
- Gradually increase the volume
What DOESN'T WORK (And Can Make It Worse)
Yelling "Shut up!"
The dog thinks you are barking along. This reinforces the behavior.
Punishment After Return
The dog doesn't understand what he's being punished for. He thinks he's being punished for trusting you.
Second Dog for "Company"
If the first dog has separation anxiety, the second dog won't solve it. It may even make it worse.
Bark Collar
It addresses the symptom, not the cause. The dog is still suffering, just silently.
Ignoring Problems
"Maybe he'll stop on his own..." - No. The problem will only get worse.
When is Professional Help Needed?
If you do not see improvement after 4-6 weeks of consistent work, or if:
- Dog barks for 4+ hours without stopping
- Destructive behavior intensifies
- The dog injures itself (chews its legs, tail)
- Neighbors complain (risk of losing housing)
- You are feeling very stressed.
Contact:
- Certified dog trainer/behaviorist
- Veterinarian (to rule out medical problems)
- Veterinary behaviorist (can prescribe medication)
Medical Assistance:
In severe cases, the veterinarian may prescribe:
- Anti-anxiety medications (fluoxetine, clomipramine)
- Short-term sedatives (for travel, visits)
- Natural supplements (L-theanine, tryptophan)
Medications are NOT the solution - they only help the dog be calm enough to learn.
